Florentine Opera presents Jack and the Beanstalk
An operatic version of Jack & the Beanstalk based on scenes from the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan. Living in poverty with his mother, Jack sells the family cow to a mysterious dustman for a handful of beans. When he returns home and shows his mom the scrawny seeds, she throws them out a window in despair. The beans take root, and in the moonlight a magical stalk grows to the sky. Discovering the beanstalk and climbing it, Jack finds himself in the castle of a very large oaf and his kindly, but haggard, wife. Learning that this giant has taken his father's golden hen, Jack, with the help of the Giant's wife, stealthily takes it back. The Giant, in pursuit of Jack, receives a bump on the head after falling from the beanstalk, causing him to forget he's supposed to be "bad." Children are introduced to opera while learning the importance of behaving well and treating others as you would want to be treated. Program also includes a Q & A session with our cast. Featuring the vocal talents of the 2009-10 Florentine Opera Studio Artists in Residence. For more information visit www.florentineopera.org

Pinewood Derby

Let’s Go Racing
NASCAR’s season has started and so has the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby season. Similar to NASCAR, there are many Pinewood Derby races that end with a photo finish, crashes, and excitement from the crowd. Fans of racing are invited to watch boys from the North Shore/Brown Deer area race their cars in attempt to be crowned District Champs.
The boys have put a lot of time and effort into making their cars fast, sleek, and eye-popping. Some of the cars can be considered a work of art and too pretty to risk damage, but don’t tell that to the boys. Award categories will include: fastest car, most original design, and most realistic paint job. Special thanks go to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Dave’s World for helping provide the trophies for the event.
There is no cost to watch the event. Only boys from the Polaris District in Milwaukee County Council can race, but anyone can attend as spectators. The race will be held on April 11th, and it will start at 12:30 p.m. The race track will be located in the Rotunda area of Bayshore Town Center. Come join the fun!
